Among the specific targets are forests in the Amazon and the Congo Basin, two of the world's largest tropical forest regions.
In announcing the commitment, the government warned that environmental shocks are increasingly being viewed as a national security concern, underscoring the link between ecological degradation and global instability.
The pledge comes amid growing international attention to the security implications of climate change, including resource scarcity, displacement and conflict over natural resources.
