UK Orders Independent Review of Air Traffic Control Failure

UK transport minister Heidi Alexander has ordered an independent CAA review into an air traffic control outage that caused thousands of flight cancellations.

British Transport Minister Heidi Alexander has directed the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to launch an independent investigation into a recent air traffic control system failure that led to widespread flight cancellations across the country.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Alexander said she had formally instructed the regulator to establish the root cause of the outage and assess the resilience of the systems that manage UK airspace.

"I am clear that passengers should not have to face this disruption," Alexander told lawmakers. "I have therefore asked the CAA to conduct an independent review to establish cause and ensure that our air traffic control systems can get passengers to where they need to be."

The minister also expressed her view that the incident was preventable, stating, "I do not believe this issue was unavoidable."

The review comes after the technical failure forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights, leaving passengers stranded and raising questions about the robustness of critical aviation infrastructure. The CAA's findings are expected to inform future safeguards and operational improvements.
