UK PM Burnham Pledges Full Support to Ukraine on First Overseas Visit

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham made his first overseas visit since taking office last month, travelling to Kyiv on Monday to mark Ukraine's Independence Day. He used the occasion to deliver a strong message of continued support.

Speaking at a ceremony in the Ukrainian capital, Burnham said he would honour every commitment his country has made to Ukraine "in full." He addressed the gathering directly, stating, "It is my first overseas visit and I chose to do this, and I hope it tells you something about the importance that I attach to your cause." His remarks were met with applause.

The UK Prime Minister was among nearly a dozen European leaders and dignitaries present for the commemorations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska greeted the arriving guests, including Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and European Council President Antonio Costa.

During the event, President Zelenskyy presented awards to several servicemen in recognition of their service. A moment of silence was also observed as part of the ceremony.

Burnham's schedule in Kyiv included co-chairing a meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing, a group of nations assisting Ukraine in its defence against Russia's invasion. Leaders from France and Germany were expected to participate in the meeting via video link.
