UK PM Burnham Holds Talks in Kyiv on Ukraine Independence Day
UK PM Andy Burnham met President Zelenskyy in Kyiv during Ukraine's 35th independence anniversary, discussing defense and sanctions.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Monday, marking his first overseas visit since assuming office last month. The bilateral meeting took place as both leaders participated in events commemorating the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence.
Burnham joined nearly a dozen other European leaders and dignitaries in the Ukrainian capital for the anniversary celebrations. During his visit, the British Prime Minister co-chaired a session of the Coalition of the Willing, an alliance of over two dozen nations supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
A key focus of the discussions was air defense. Burnham said he is encouraging British industry to contribute to a Ukrainian initiative developing a low-cost alternative to the American-made Patriot systems, which remain critically needed but are in limited supply.
The UK Prime Minister also called on other countries to push Washington toward imposing stricter sanctions on Russia and to press Moscow to accept U.S. efforts aimed at securing an unconditional ceasefire.
