Two Police Officers Among Seven Dead in Wrong-Way A66 Crash

Seven people, including two police officers, died in a head-on crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough after a Volkswagen Passat was travelling the wrong way.

Seven people, including two serving police officers, have died following a head-on collision on the A66 highway near Middlesbrough in northeast England. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller confirmed that a Volkswagen Passat carrying five occupants was travelling the wrong way down the carriageway when it collided with a marked police armed response vehicle. The police car was travelling in the correct direction at the time of the crash, which was reported at 3:39 a.m.

The two officers who lost their lives have been named as PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough. All seven individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Constable Fuller described the day as "incredibly sad" for the Cleveland community, noting that the loss has been felt across the region. She extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who died, adding that the officers were "brave" individuals who did not return home at the end of their shift.

Formal identification of the five occupants of the Volkswagen Passat has now taken place. Specialist family liaison officers have been deployed to support the bereaved families, while support is also being provided to police staff affected by the tragedy.

As is mandatory in any death connected to a police incident, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). Cleveland Police have stated they are fully cooperating with the investigation.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was "devastated" to hear of the loss of life and urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing, and to respect the privacy of the families involved.
