Amputee Veterans Finish 1,500-km 'Iron Week' Race for Ukraine's Independence Day

On Monday, Ukraine's Independence Day, a group of military amputees and war veterans completed a grueling weeklong endurance challenge that took them more than 1,500 kilometers around the country. The final leg of the event, known as Iron Week, saw athletes remove their prosthetics and pull on wetsuits for a swim in a lake outside Kyiv, with some requiring assistance to enter the water.

The competition is led by Danylo Sapunov, a three-time Olympic triathlete who works to support veterans as Ukraine's war with Russia continues into its fourth year. Speaking as the athletes gathered at the lake, Sapunov stressed that the event was not about winning. "This is not a competition. There is no winner, and it does not matter who swims faster," he said. "The important thing is to participate and unite as one."

Over seven consecutive days, the participants swam, cycled, and ran through various parts of Ukraine, including cities in the war-torn east. The challenge coincided with official Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv, where European leaders joined President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to mark the anniversary of Ukraine's 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union.

For many of the athletes, the event was a milestone in their recovery. Yevhenii Lakhnenko, a 46-year-old serviceman who lost his right arm and left leg after being wounded last October, said swimming had been central to his rehabilitation. "I am finishing my recovery and will get back in the ranks," he said. "I do not think there is another country in the world as strong as Ukraine. Only our people are capable of doing what we are doing."

Maksym Yuzviak, a 35-year-old strike-drone operator who lost both legs in January 2025, linked the country's independence to the resolve of its citizens. "Independence is about the people," he said. "People who are ready to take responsibility and who, as they say, are capable of taking action."
