Ukraine Backs Push for Energy Ceasefire, Says Foreign Minister Sybiha

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has said Kyiv supports international efforts to secure a so-called energy ceasefire, expressing readiness to take part in such an arrangement.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kyiv alongside Monaco's Foreign Minister Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Sybiha said Ukraine welcomed the efforts of the United States to reach the understanding and that its partners were aware of its position. He added that several proposals had come from Ukraine's closest partners and other international partners on how to move forward on the track, and expressed hope that the efforts would produce the desired result.

The remarks follow a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said a day earlier that Ukraine was prepared to halt its strikes on Russian territory if allies could secure a genuine Russian commitment not to target Ukraine's critical infrastructure.

Zelenskyy's comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said in a social media post that Russia and Ukraine had agreed not to hit each other's energy infrastructure. Trump did not provide further details of the purported agreement, and Russia did not immediately comment on the claim.

Trump's post followed his call on Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian oil refineries and other infrastructure used to produce and distribute diesel, which he said was causing a global shortage. Diesel prices have risen in the United States, and high fuel costs linked to the Iran war have become a significant issue for Trump's party ahead of upcoming congressional elections.

Previous attempts to broker even a partial ceasefire have repeatedly collapsed within hours, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
