Ukraine Claims First Drone Strikes on Arctic Gas Processing Plants

Ukraine has said its forces carried out drone strikes on two gas condensate processing plants in Russia's Arctic zone for the first time, signalling a significant expansion in the range of Kyiv's attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.

The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces stated on Telegram that unmanned aerial vehicles struck facilities in the Purov district and the city of Novyi Urengoy, both located in the Yamal-Nenets region. According to the statement, the drones travelled more than 3,000 kilometres to reach their targets, making this the deepest reported attack inside Russian territory.

The Ukrainian confirmation came after Russian authorities reported an incident at an unspecified energy facility in the same region. Artem Zhoga, the presidential representative to the Urals Federal District, said on Telegram that a fire broke out at an energy complex due to falling debris. He added that there were no casualties based on preliminary data. Dmitry Artyukhov, the Governor of Yamal-Nenets, separately mentioned a fire at one of the industrial sites in Novyi Urengoy without offering further details.

Yamal-Nenets is a crucial hub for Russian natural gas production, hosting major operations run by energy giants Gazprom PJSC and Novatek PJSC. The Urengoy Condensate Preparation Plant, owned by Gazprom, is situated roughly 20 kilometres from Novyi Urengoy. Novatek operates the Purovsky plant in the Purov district.

Kyiv has intensified its campaign against Russian energy assets, ranging from oil refineries to export terminals, aiming to undermine Moscow's capacity to finance its ongoing military operations. The strikes come as Russia has escalated its own aerial bombardments on Ukrainian cities since late August.

Neither Gazprom nor Novatek has yet issued a public response to the reported attacks.
