Ukraine's August grain exports plunge 77% as port blockade bites

Ukraine's grain exports fell 77% year-on-year in early August as Black Sea port blockades outweighed gains at alternate border routes.

Ukraine's grain exports have collapsed in the first half of August, with state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reporting a 77% year-on-year drop in shipments. Between August 1 and 18, the country exported just 342,000 metric tons of grain, a figure that also represents a 68% decline compared to the same period in July.

The sharp contraction is attributed to the ongoing blockade of Black Sea ports, which has severely restricted Ukraine's primary grain export corridor. While shipments to the southern border city of Izmail and to western border crossings have increased, Ukrzaliznytsia noted that these gains were insufficient to offset the dramatic fall in cargo moving through Odesa's ports.

The data underscores the persistent logistical challenges facing Ukrainian agriculture as the war continues to disrupt traditional export routes. With the Black Sea corridor effectively closed, the country has been forced to rely on overland and river alternatives, which have proven limited in capacity compared to the sea ports.
