Amputee Veterans Join Triathlete for Independence Day Swim in Kyiv

On Ukraine's Independence Day, a group of war veterans, several of whom have lost limbs, joined professional triathlete Danylo Sapunov for a swimming event in Kyiv. The gathering marked the final day of Iron Week, during which Sapunov completed triathlon distances in cities across Ukraine over seven consecutive days, with veterans joining him at various stops.

The event was less about athletic competition and more about unity and resilience. "This is not a competition. There is no winner, and it does not matter who swims faster. The important thing is to participate and unite as one," Sapunov said.

Among the participants was Yevhenii Lakhnenko, a 46-year-old service member who lost a leg and a hand in a Russian strike in December 2025. He completed the swim and expressed pride in his country's strength. "I am truly proud of our country and, above all, of our people. I do not think there is another country in the world as strong as Ukraine," he said. Lakhnenko added that he is finishing his recovery and plans to return to service.

Maksym Yuzviak, a 35-year-old former drone operator, also took part. He was wounded in January 2025 when a drone attack targeted his position. Reflecting on the meaning of independence, he said, "Independence is the people — people who are ready to take responsibility and who, as they say, are capable of taking action."

The event coincided with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991. For the veterans, the swim was a demonstration of endurance and a reminder of the ongoing cost of preserving their nation's freedom.
