Ukraine Braces for Prolonged War, Seeks Allied Air Defence and Energy Package

Ukraine expects the war to continue through winter and is seeking allied aid for air defence and energy, including US LNG.

Ukraine has signalled that it does not anticipate a swift conclusion to the conflict with Russia, with officials bracing for the war to extend through another difficult winter. The assessment follows a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and United States envoys, during which the focus shifted to securing sustained allied support rather than expecting an early breakthrough.

Kyiv is now looking to allies for a comprehensive assistance package that would strengthen its air defence capabilities. Alongside military reinforcements, Ukrainian officials are emphasising the need for energy-related support, specifically pointing to the potential supply of liquefied natural gas from the United States.

The request reflects a broader strategy of shoring up resilience ahead of colder months, when energy infrastructure becomes a critical vulnerability. With no immediate end to hostilities in sight, Ukraine appears to be recalibrating its expectations and preparing for a prolonged campaign, prioritising defensive systems and energy security as key pillars of its winter strategy.
