UN Condemns Russian Strikes on Kyiv, Urges Immediate De-escalation
The UN condemned Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other cities, urging de-escalation and a ceasefire after civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.
The United Nations has strongly condemned a large-scale missile and drone attack by Russian forces on Kyiv and other Ukrainian urban centers, describing the strikes as a tragic example of escalating violence against populated areas. The attacks reportedly killed and injured dozens of civilians and caused extensive damage to homes, hospitals, and a school.
Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, stated that attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are a clear violation of international humanitarian law wherever they occur and must stop immediately. He reiterated the Secretary-General's deep concern over the continued escalation of the conflict, including onto Russian territory.
The UN has reiterated its call for urgent de-escalation, leading to a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire, and for a just and sustainable peace in line with international law and the UN Charter. Tom Fletcher, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, is currently in Kyiv and said the aftermath of the deadly night for civilians should outrage everyone.
Humanitarian partners have provided an immediate emergency response following the attacks, offering first aid, psychological support, hot meals, construction materials, and cash assistance to complement the efforts of local emergency services. The strikes come as Moscow's forces have intensified ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in recent months, exploiting a shortage of air defense interceptors.
