UN official warns Ebola outbreak in Congo spreading at alarming rate
UN's Julien Harneis says Congo's Ebola outbreak is growing exponentially, spreading over an area larger than France, with 43 health workers dead.
The United Nations' senior Ebola coordinator in the Democratic Republic of Congo has issued a stark warning, stating that the current outbreak is "growing exponentially" and has now spread across a geographical area larger than the size of France.
Julien Harneis, who leads the UN's Ebola response in the country, described the operating conditions for humanitarian teams as "brutal." The warning comes amid a backdrop of widespread insecurity and direct attacks against aid providers, severely hampering containment efforts.
The human toll on frontline medical staff has been particularly severe. According to the UN official, 43 healthcare workers have died from the disease, out of a total of 160 who have contracted it. These figures underscore the extreme danger faced by those attempting to curb the epidemic's spread.
The expanding geographic footprint of the virus, combined with the difficult security environment, presents a formidable challenge to international and local response teams working to bring the outbreak under control.
