UN Envoy Warns Yemen at Risk of Renewed Large-Scale Conflict
The UN's Yemen envoy warns the country faces its highest risk of renewed large-scale conflict since the 2022 truce, urging de-escalation and negotiations.
The United Nations has sounded a fresh alarm over Yemen's trajectory, with its special envoy warning that the country now faces a greater risk of renewed large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce of April 2022.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq relayed the assessment of Hans Grundberg, the Personal Envoy for Yemen. Grundberg cautioned over the weekend that recent developments threaten to undermine the relative calm that has largely held inside Yemen in recent years.
According to the UN, Grundberg warned that the current trajectory could not only reverse the gains of the 2022 truce but also pull Yemen into a broader regional confrontation, with devastating consequences for its people.
In response, the envoy has been engaging intensively with Yemeni parties, regional actors, and international partners to explore concrete options for de-escalation. Haq said Grundberg remains convinced that a diplomatic path is still available.
Grundberg is calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from actions that could provoke military retaliation, and engage in good-faith negotiations under UN auspices. The United Nations has reiterated its commitment to supporting the parties and standing with the Yemeni people in the pursuit of a peaceful resolution.
