UN Adopts Map Resolution; Arunachal, Aksai Chin Shown as Separate Regions

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution titled "Correct the Map," backed by the African Union, which calls for more accurate and equitable cartographic representation of the world's regions, with a particular focus on Africa.

The resolution comes amid renewed attention to how international maps depict disputed territories. Notably, the UN's own cartographic materials show Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as separate regions situated between India and China, rather than as integral parts of either country.

This depiction has long been a point of contention for New Delhi, which asserts that Arunachal Pradesh is an inalienable part of India. Beijing similarly claims the area, while also maintaining its position on Aksai Chin, which India considers part of Ladakh.

The adoption of the African Union-backed measure last week signals a broader push within the international body to address perceived imbalances in global mapmaking. While the resolution's primary thrust is on improving the representation of African nations, its passage has drawn fresh focus to how other contested geographies are rendered in official UN materials.
