UN records deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since 2022

The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission has documented a sharp escalation in civilian harm in Ukraine, reporting that July 2026 saw the highest number of civilian casualties in the conflict since March 2022.
According to figures released on Thursday, at least 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 were injured in Ukraine during July. This represents a 30 percent increase compared to the previous month and a 70 percent rise from July 2025.
Daniela Gross De Almeida, Associate Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, told reporters in New York that the verified numbers likely understate the true scale of the suffering. "The actual figure is likely higher, as the Monitoring Mission continues to verify information," she said.
The new data underscores the intensifying toll of the ongoing war, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The UN mission continues to document casualties as part of its monitoring efforts, though access and verification challenges often delay a complete accounting.
