Uttar Pradesh Unveils Rs 1,051-Crore Development Push for Mathura-Vrindavan
UP CM launches 229 projects worth Rs 1,051 crore in Mathura-Vrindavan, focusing on infrastructure, tourism, and grand temple plans.
The Uttar Pradesh government has initiated a major development drive for the twin pilgrimage cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launching 229 projects collectively valued at Rs 1,051 crore. The announcement was made on Krishna Janmashtami, following prayers at the Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi temple.
The project portfolio includes 62 completed works worth Rs 540 crore that were inaugurated, alongside 167 projects with a combined value exceeding Rs 437 crore for which foundation stones were laid. Additionally, Rs 72 crore was transferred directly to beneficiaries under various housing schemes.
Key infrastructure projects include a Rs 251-crore four-lane highway connecting the Yamuna Expressway to Vrindavan, designed to ease pilgrim traffic. A new two-lane bridge over the Yamuna river will improve access to rural areas. A 12-storey tourist hostel, costing Rs 47 crore, is being built within the Nayara Police Lines campus to accommodate the surge of visitors during festivals. Other projects feature a Rs 31-crore civic training centre in Vrindavan, a Rs 86-crore master-plan road for Chhata, a Rs 44-crore flyover, and a Rs 35-crore beautification of the Chhatikara road.
Future plans include a ropeway in Vrindavan, mega parking projects, the Raya Urban Node, a Surdas Brajbhasha Academy, and a 400-acre city forest named Saurabhi Van.
Beyond civic works, the Chief Minister announced intentions to build grand temple complexes in the Braj region, matching the scale of those in Ayodhya and Kashi. This move aligns with the state government's long-standing narrative of replicating the Ayodhya model of religious tourism-led development.
The infrastructure improvements are expected to significantly reduce travel time from Delhi-NCR, potentially making Mathura and Vrindavan more accessible for weekend tourists and second-home buyers. Industry observers note that while the investment is a turning point, development must be planned carefully to preserve the region's spiritual character and heritage, ensuring modernisation does not come at the cost of its ancient ghats and lanes.
