The Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission has sought a detailed report from the District Magistrate of Shamli regarding the police encounter deaths of Mohit and Sumit, who were accused in the murder of Haryanvi singer Ankit Balyan.
The Commission's action follows a complaint filed by Amitabh Thakur, a former IPS officer and national president of Azad Adhikar Sena. Thakur has demanded an independent inquiry into the encounter, alleging that the two accused were apprehended and then killed in a fake encounter.
In his complaint, Thakur also raised concerns about the treatment of Sumit's brother, who, according to Sumit's father Dharampal, was subjected to third-degree treatment by the police. Thakur has called for a separate probe into this allegation.
The Commission has directed the District Magistrate to submit the report by November 13, 2026, and has scheduled the next hearing for November 16, 2026. The Superintendent of Police, Shamli, had earlier informed the Commission about the deaths in a communication dated August 31.
Mohit and Sumit were killed in an encounter with the Shamli police and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. Both carried a reward of ₹50,000 each. Ankit Balyan was shot dead outside his gym in Shamli on August 26 by four assailants on two motorcycles. Two other suspects in the case remain at large.
