US Confirms On-Orbit Space Control Weapons, Keeps Details Classified

The US has acknowledged for the first time that it operates weapons in orbit, saying the capability can defend its forces against hostile action in space.

The United States has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it operates weapons in orbit, confirming a military capability in space that had not previously been disclosed.

Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said Washington now fields what he described as "on-orbit space control weapons" capable of defending American forces against hostile action. He made the statement during a speech at the Air & Space Forces Association's Air, Space & Cyber Conference in Maryland, but did not identify the system or say when it was deployed.

A deliberate disclosure

Meink indicated the revelation was intentional and aimed at deterring potential adversaries. Speaking later with reporters, he said releasing further information could blunt that deterrent effect. He declined to discuss the weapon's design, its capabilities, testing history or the kinds of targets it might engage.

The Space Force subsequently offered a broader definition of "space control", describing it as a set of missions intended to challenge and manage activity in space through both kinetic and non-kinetic means. Such capabilities, it said, could be used to disrupt, degrade or, if necessary, destroy an adversary's space systems, and could serve offensive as well as defensive purposes — including technologies that interfere with satellites without physically destroying them.

Questions over the system's nature

The absence of detail has fuelled speculation. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation suggested the weapon could be a space-based jammer, noting that the US has generally avoided kinetic attacks on satellites because the resulting debris can endanger other spacecraft. Clayton Swope of the Center for Strategic and International Studies argued the announcement was too broad to constitute a clear deterrent, saying countries such as China and Russia would need at least a general sense of the weapon's destructive power and the circumstances in which Washington might use it.

Both Russia and China are regarded as potential threats to American interests in space. The Space Force has said China develops and operates space and counterspace capabilities as part of a military modernisation strategy, while Russia views space as a warfighting domain and believes space supremacy will be decisive in future conflicts.

An evolving competition

In 2024, the US said Russia had placed a satellite in orbit that it believed could potentially attack other spacecraft. More recently, reports have suggested that two Russian satellites may have intercepted communications from at least a dozen European satellites since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. China has likewise been developing counterspace technologies designed to disrupt or disable an adversary's satellites.

Washington has itself grown more open about offensive space capabilities. In 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order strengthening the Space Force's responsibility for protecting American space assets and developing capabilities to attack adversaries' systems.

Roots in the Cold War

Military competition in space dates back to the space race. After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik in 1957, both Washington and Moscow explored ways to place weapons in orbit and to disable or destroy satellites. Nuclear weapons were initially seen as the principal orbital threat, but the United States, the Soviet Union and other countries signed the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, which bars the deployment of weapons of mass destruction in orbit.

Despite that treaty, major powers have continued to develop capabilities usable in conflicts beyond its restrictions. Russia, the US, China and India have all pursued technologies aimed at targeting or disrupting rival satellites. Satellites underpin modern military operations — supporting communications, surveillance and navigation — and their growing importance has made space an increasingly contested domain.
