The United States has formally adjusted the list of Canadian products subject to its 50 percent additional tariffs, a move announced through a presidential proclamation on Tuesday. The revised measures are scheduled to take effect at 00:01 Eastern Time on September 15, 2026.
The original tariffs were introduced after Washington determined that Canadian policies in the motor vehicle sector unfairly discriminated against US commerce and placed an undue burden on American businesses. In response, the US had imposed the steep additional duties on a selection of Canadian imports.
Following an assessment of how these tariffs were impacting trade, the US government concluded that revising the product coverage would still offset the burden on American commerce while better aligning with the broader public interest. The latest proclamation adds certain Canadian products to the 50 percent tariff list while removing others from it.
The specific items affected by these additions and removals are detailed in the annex accompanying the proclamation. This recalibration comes amid ongoing trade tensions between the two neighbours over industrial policy and market access.
