US Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Manipur, Meets CM and Governor

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Imphal on Friday for a two-day visit to Manipur, a state navigating a humanitarian crisis linked to its ongoing ethnic conflict. He was accompanied by US Consul General in Kolkata Kathy Giles-Diaz.

Shortly after landing, Gor visited Ema Keithel, the all-women market in the heart of the capital that dates to the 16th century and is widely described as the world's largest of its kind. Its name translates to 'Mother's Market'. The envoy interacted with several women vendors.

He also toured Kangla Fort, the former administrative centre of the Kingdom of Manipur and a significant historical and archaeological site.

Gor then met Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri. Singh flagged tourism and allied sectors as areas with potential for development and cooperation.

In a post on X, Gor said he enjoyed hearing the Chief Minister's vision for Manipur and that they exchanged ideas on expanding economic ties between the US and India. He added that Singh had invited him back for the Manipur Sangai Festival.

Singh described the meeting as a pleasure and said the two discussed relations between the US and Manipur, expressing confidence that engagement would strengthen in the years ahead.

Later, the ambassador called on Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at his official residence. Gor said they discussed the importance of continued US-India engagement.

The ambassador is scheduled to leave Imphal on Saturday.
