US clears $4.5 billion aerial refuelling aircraft sale to Qatar

US State Department approves potential $4.5 billion sale of KC-46A refuelling aircraft to Qatar, with Boeing as principal contractor.

The United States has given the go-ahead for a major defence sale to Qatar, approving the potential transfer of KC-46A aerial refuelling aircraft and associated equipment. The deal, announced by the State Department on Thursday, carries an estimated value of $4.50 billion.

The approval marks a significant step in Washington's ongoing defence partnership with Doha, which has been expanding its military capabilities in recent years. The KC-46A, manufactured by Boeing, is a next-generation tanker aircraft designed to refuel other aircraft mid-flight, extending their operational range and endurance.

The State Department's statement identified Boeing as the principal contractor for the sale. It also named Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, RTX Corp, and Northrop Grumman Corp as other key companies involved in the supply chain for the aircraft and its related systems.

The announcement is part of the standard US foreign military sales process, where Congress is typically notified of the proposed deal. The final contract value and delivery schedule would be determined after formal negotiations between the Qatari government and the contractors.
