US Carrier Washington Begins Middle East Deployment as Lincoln Heads Home

USS George Washington carrier strike group arrives in Middle East; USS Abraham Lincoln departs after nine-month deployment.

The USS George Washington carrier strike group has entered the Middle East and commenced its scheduled deployment, according to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The carrier crossed into CENTCOM's area of responsibility on August 19 and is now operating in the region as planned, the command said in a social media post on Thursday.

The arrival marks a transition in U.S. naval posture in the region. The USS Abraham Lincoln, which had been stationed in the Middle East since January 2026, has concluded its extended mission and is now en route to its home port in San Diego, California. The journey is expected to take roughly four to five weeks.

The Lincoln's deployment, which lasted over 250 days at sea, involved participation in U.S. military operations and a naval blockade against Iran. The prolonged high-tempo schedule took a toll on the crew, with reports indicating difficult living conditions and rising mental health concerns among sailors due to the extended time away from home.

The rotation of carrier strike groups ensures a continued U.S. naval presence in the region while allowing the Lincoln's crew to return after their lengthy deployment.
