US and China to Open AI Risk Dialogue After Xi's Washington Visit
China's foreign minister says Beijing and Washington will begin talks on AI risks and jointly host major economic summits after Xi's visit.
China and the United States are set to begin a dialogue on the risks posed by artificial intelligence, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, describing the move as one of several positive outcomes from President Xi Jinping's visit to Washington.
The two sides also agreed to cooperate on hosting major economic summits, Wang said, signalling a broadening of engagement beyond the tariff disputes that have dominated recent exchanges.
The AI talks would address the dangers associated with advanced, or "super intelligence" systems — an area where both governments have signalled interest in managing risk even as they compete for technological advantage.
Wang framed the developments as evidence of steadier relations following the summit, pointing to joint work on international economic gatherings as a concrete area of collaboration.
The announcement marks a widening of the bilateral agenda, which has largely centred on trade measures and tariffs in recent months. By adding AI safety and summit coordination to the list of shared undertakings, the two governments appear to be testing whether cooperation can extend into newer and more sensitive domains.
