US Department of War adds ChatGPT Mil and Grok to secure AI platform

The US Department of War has simultaneously deployed two new artificial intelligence tools on its secure enterprise platform, GenAI.mil. OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI's Grok for Government are now operational, significantly broadening the range of frontier AI capabilities available to defense personnel.

Both systems have received accreditation for handling Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5. This ensures compliance with strict security baselines while allowing the tools to operate at enterprise scale across the department.

ChatGPT Mil marks the formal adoption phase of an enterprise partnership established between the Department and OpenAI in 2025. The platform is designed to support document-intensive unclassified workloads, including planning, policy, logistics, and administration. It is built to serve more than three million personnel across the Joint Force.

The Department stated that ChatGPT Mil brings a familiar commercial experience into its secure environment, tailored to warfighter needs. The core experience centers on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs, with additional features to be introduced over time.

Separately, the integration of Starshield AI's Grok expands operational capabilities with adaptive reasoning modes, deep-thinking inference, persistent projects, and standardized playbooks. These features are intended to preserve institutional knowledge and improve collaboration.

According to the Department, Grok for Government will enable the Joint Force to execute missions faster and with greater precision. Use cases range from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply chain management for logisticians.

The dual deployment is part of the Department's broader AI Acceleration Strategy. Since GenAI.mil debuted nine months ago, the platform has onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users. By offering competing frontier models, the Department aims to reduce vendor lock-in.

Through the Chief Digital and AI Office and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, the Department plans to continue scaling frontier AI as a force multiplier. The launch also supports the White House's AI Action Plan and reinforces the Department's commitment to AI adoption for warfighter mission sets and decision superiority.
