US Energy Department Abandons Three Proposed Power Corridors

The US Department of Energy has decided against designating three proposed National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors, reversing a move initiated under the previous administration. Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the projects will not move forward.

The three cancelled corridors are the Lake Erie-Canada Corridor, the Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor, and the Tribal Energy Access Corridor. These were originally selected by the Biden administration as part of efforts to modernise and expand the country's power transmission infrastructure.

In a statement, Secretary Wright said the existing designation framework had proven ineffective in achieving its core objectives. The framework, he noted, did not sufficiently strengthen grid reliability or reduce electricity costs for consumers.

The decision marks a significant shift in federal energy policy, potentially affecting regional power distribution plans and cross-border electricity arrangements.
