Measles Resurgence: US Reports First Deaths in 2026 as Cases Surge

Health officials in Pennsylvania have confirmed two measles-related deaths, marking the first fatalities from the disease in the United States in 2026 and the first in the state in 35 years. The deaths come as the country grapples with its most significant measles resurgence in decades, driven largely by a decline in childhood vaccination rates.
Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 2,777 confirmed measles cases as of August 20. The caseload hit a 35-year high in July. Of these, 94% are linked to outbreaks, with 36 new outbreaks reported in 2026 alone. Hospitalizations this year stand at 169, compared to 243 in all of 2025.
The recent surge is attributed to falling immunization coverage. CDC data shows kindergarten vaccination rates dropped from 95.2% in the 2019–2020 school year to 92.7% in 2023–2024. This decline has been fueled by unscientific claims linking vaccines to autism, a theory originating from a debunked 1990s study. Public figures, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., have amplified these doubts for years.
Measles is highly contagious, spreading through respiratory droplets and remaining airborne for up to two hours. Up to 90% of unvaccinated people nearby will become infected if exposed. Symptoms, including fever, cough, and a blotchy rash, appear 10 to 21 days after exposure, during which time infected individuals can unknowingly spread the virus.
The MMR vaccine, given in two doses, offers 97% protection. Health experts stress that achieving 95% vaccination coverage among kindergartners is critical for herd immunity, which protects vulnerable populations like infants and those with immune disorders. There is no specific treatment for measles; care focuses on hydration, fever reduction, and managing complications like pneumonia. While high-dose vitamin A has shown benefit in malnourished populations, experts caution its use in developed countries is not well-supported and carries toxicity risks, requiring medical supervision.
