US Strike on Suspected Smuggling Boat in Caribbean Kills Four

The US military carried out a strike on a boat suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean Sea on Saturday, killing four people, as the Trump administration presses ahead with its campaign against alleged traffickers in Latin America.

The operation raises the total number of people killed in US military boat strikes to at least 231 across 69 attacks since the administration began targeting those it labels "narcoterrorists" nearly a year ago.

US Southern Command said the vessel was targeted along known smuggling routes, a standard formulation used in most of its statements about strikes in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The military did not provide evidence that the boat was carrying drugs. A video posted on X showed what appeared to be a moving vessel followed by a flash.

Washington is simultaneously pursuing agreements with allied nations to extend its offensive onto land in multiple Latin American countries. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said during a visit to Panama last month that Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras had agreed to allow joint military operations against criminal groups on their territory. Guatemala denied reaching such a deal. Ecuador launched similar missions with the US in March.

President Donald Trump has described the US as being in "armed conflict" with cartels in Latin America, framing the strikes as a necessary escalation to curb the flow of drugs into the United States and fatal overdoses among Americans. The administration has offered little evidence to support its claims of killing smugglers.
