US Sanctions Turkish Bank Over Iran Financial Lifeline

The US Treasury has sanctioned a Turkish bank, calling it a critical financial lifeline for Iran, amid escalating economic and military pressure.

The United States Treasury has imposed sanctions on a Turkish financial institution, Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi, describing it as a "critical financial lifeline" for the Iranian government. The action, announced on Friday, is part of Washington's ongoing campaign to isolate Tehran economically.

The move comes nearly a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled "Operation Economic Outcast," a broader strategy aimed at compelling Iran to yield to US demands following more than six months of conflict. Last week, the US also targeted an Egyptian bank's operations in the United Arab Emirates.

However, the initial phase of the operation has shown limited results. Promises of an "Economic D-Day" have given way to warnings and negotiations with Iran's remaining trade partners. The administration has simultaneously resumed military strikes in recent days, which have drawn Iranian retaliation and heightened fears of a wider regional war.

The effectiveness of this dual economic and military approach remains uncertain, as the administration continues to grapple with an intransigent Iranian government.
