US Treasury Signals New Iran Sanctions on Airlines, Shipping, Digital Assets

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says airlines, maritime, and digital assets are potential targets in new Iran sanctions.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that the Trump administration is preparing to expand its economic pressure campaign against Iran, with airlines, the maritime industry, and digital assets emerging as potential targets.

Speaking on Fox News on Wednesday, Bessent said Washington is examining these sectors as part of its ongoing efforts to isolate Tehran's economy. His remarks followed a G20 gathering in North Carolina and came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly expressed support for Iran.

Bessent warned that any nation or entity providing assistance to Iran would face consequences. "My message to everyone is stay away," he said, adding that the fastest way to end the conflict is for no one to support the Iranian regime. He noted that the US is holding "very fulsome talks" with those backing Tehran.

The Treasury Secretary also said additional sanctions on Iranian banks could be announced this week, and that airline leasing companies may be targeted. The comments underscore the administration's broader strategy of cutting off financial and logistical channels that sustain Iran's economy and regional activities.
