US Bond Yields Climb to Multi-Year Highs as Oil Rally Stirs Inflation Worries

US Treasury yields hit multi-year highs as oil prices jumped on US-Iran tensions, reviving global inflation fears.

US government bond yields climbed to their highest levels in nearly three years on Wednesday, as a sharp rise in oil prices reignited concerns about inflation and tighter monetary policy.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 4.81%, its strongest reading since November 2023. The 30-year bond yield also moved higher, adding 2 basis points to reach 5.287%.

The move was driven by a fresh escalation in the US-Iran conflict, which has raised fears of supply disruptions in global energy markets. Brent crude futures jumped 2% to $96.52 per barrel, following a near 6% surge in the previous session after the two countries exchanged strikes overnight.

The jump in energy costs has revived worries that inflation could remain sticky, prompting investors to reassess the path of interest rates. The ripple effect was felt across developed markets, where bond yields also rose on concerns over monetary tightening and deteriorating fiscal positions.

Traders are now watching for further developments in the Middle East and upcoming economic data that could influence the Federal Reserve's next policy move.
