Pattaya's Complex Allure Draws USS Abraham Lincoln Crew

Pattaya, Thailand's seaside resort known for its wild nightlife, is preparing to host thousands of sailors and Marines from the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group this week. The visit offers a brief respite after a long deployment in the Middle East, with around 5,000 personnel expected to take shore leave in the city, located about 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok.

While Pattaya's reputation as a sex tourism hub lingers, recent visitors note a shift toward family-friendly attractions. The city has invested in parks, malls, luxury resorts, and attractions like a Cartoon Network-themed water park, the Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden, and the towering all-wood Sanctuary of Truth Museum. Golf courses, island day trips, and running events add to the mix, drawing tourists from across Asia.

However, the old Pattaya remains accessible via Walking Street, the heart of its racy nightlife district. The military connection dates back to the Vietnam War era, when U.S. bases nearby brought tens of thousands of personnel to the region, transforming a quiet fishing village into a raunchy playground. A 1966 law created a legal gray area for the sex trade, which flourished despite a 1960 ban, drawing workers from Thailand's poor northeast to send money home.

After U.S. forces withdrew in 1976, Pattaya pivoted to civilian tourists, and later, in the 1990s, attracted Russian visitors with direct flights and visa-free entry. The city also became a haven for international fugitives, but has since tried to rebrand itself.

For the sailors, shore leave includes community outreach like medical care and orphanage visits, boosting the local economy. The U.S. Navy deploys Shore Patrol to work with Thai police to manage any trouble. While prostitution is technically illegal in Thailand and punishable under U.S. military law, the city's complex history and modern evolution make it a multifaceted destination for rest and recuperation.
