Vigilance traps Nedumangad police officer accepting ₹10,000 bribe

A civil police officer attached to the Nedumangad police station was apprehended by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) on Friday while allegedly accepting a bribe, officials said.

The officer, identified as Biju, was taken into custody by Vigilance personnel. The arrest followed a complaint from a Panavoor resident who had approached the Nedumangad police station seeking documents related to a road accident that occurred in March, which were required to claim compensation.

According to the complaint, Biju insisted that the paperwork be routed through a lawyer of his choosing, even though the complainant had already engaged a different legal representative. The officer is alleged to have contacted the lawyer directly and demanded ₹10,000 to hand over the case documents.

The complainant then approached the VACB, which laid a trap. Biju was allegedly caught while accepting the money outside the police station premises.

The case highlights the continuing use of trap operations by the anti-corruption agency to catch public servants red-handed. Further proceedings in the matter are expected as the investigation continues.
