Media, Military Guests Detained at Gunpoint in Vandenberg Security Mix-Up

Invited journalists and military personnel were briefly held at gunpoint at Vandenberg Space Force Base due to a communication breakdown.

A routine invitation-only event at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California turned tense on Monday when security officers detained a group of invited guests at gunpoint, mistaking them for unauthorized intruders.

The group included five news reporters and two military members who were part of an escorted convoy heading to a groundbreaking ceremony for a new missile operator training facility near Santa Barbara. They were traveling in a government minivan with uniformed public affairs staff when officers suddenly ordered everyone out of the vehicles with their hands raised.

According to local reports, officers drew their firearms, activated sirens, and raised barricades at the gate. The two service members—one enlisted and one junior officer—were handcuffed and placed in base vehicles, while the civilians were told to sit on a curb. The detainment lasted more than 30 minutes, causing the group to miss the event entirely. All were released without further incident.

A spokesperson for Space Launch Delta 30 Public Affairs described the episode as a breakdown in communication. The base said it is experiencing a higher number of unauthorized entry attempts and that every potential threat must be treated as legitimate until proven otherwise, while acknowledging the situation may have been unsettling.

Tom Bolton, editor in chief of Noozhawk, one of the affected outlets, called the incident unfortunate and unnecessary, noting the potential danger of drawn firearms. He said he plans to speak with base leadership later this week to review the events and prevent a recurrence.
