Varuna Elevated Corridor to Reshape Varanasi's Transport Network
The 43.218-km Varuna Elevated Corridor, approved by the Union Cabinet in July, will connect NH-31 to the Varanasi Ring Road, cutting travel times and boosting regional connectivity.
The Varuna River, which has shaped Varanasi's geography and culture for centuries, is set to anchor a new chapter in the city's urban mobility. The ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor, cleared by the Union Cabinet in July, will run 43.218 km along the river, linking NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road and offering an alternative high-capacity route through the city.
The National Highways Authority of India, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, will build the predominantly elevated 6/4-lane corridor. The project includes a main carriageway, flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads, along with an iconic cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge.
A key link in the decongestion plan
The corridor forms part of the Varanasi Decongestion Plan, which aims to improve movement between highways, railway stations, the airport and key urban destinations. By directly connecting NH-31 and the Ring Road, it will improve access to Varanasi Airport, Varanasi Cantonment, Varanasi City Railway Station, Kashi Railway Station and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, as well as Ramnagar Port and areas along the Varuna.
Designed for speeds of 80–100 kmph, the corridor is expected to cut travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from about 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes. The journey between Varanasi Junction and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is projected to fall from nearly an hour to around 20 minutes. The project also aims to ease congestion at Varanasi Junction, Phulwaria and Chaukaghat, where local, commercial and through traffic converge on limited road capacity.
Connecting culture, education and the economy
The improved network is expected to provide faster, more predictable journeys for residents, pilgrims, tourists, students and businesses. It will facilitate smoother access to the ghats, the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor and the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, and help distribute traffic during festivals and peak pilgrimage periods. Access to institutions such as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University will also improve.
Aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor is expected to strengthen Varanasi's role as a regional logistics and economic hub. It will improve access to the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone, Chandauli Social Node and six major logistics nodes, supporting the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, construction materials and minerals between Varanasi, Chandauli and adjoining regions.
The project includes ₹4,565.33 crore for civil construction and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition. Its elevated alignment, supported by loops, ramps and service roads, is intended to add transport capacity in a densely built and historically significant area while limiting the need for extensive road widening through existing neighbourhoods. By separating longer-distance movement from local traffic, the corridor is positioned to serve as a modern mobility spine for a city where heritage, pilgrimage, education, commerce and tourism converge.
