Venezuela's Acting President Thanks Trump at UN for Willingness to Resume Ties

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, used her first address to the United Nations General Assembly to thank President Donald Trump for his willingness to restore relations between Washington and Caracas, and to declare that her country is recovering from the upheavals of the past year.

"Today, Venezuela is being reborn," Rodriguez told the assembly, describing a nation working to move past what she called the setbacks it endured this year.

Rodriguez assumed power after a surprise U.S. military raid in January that captured then-leader Nicolás Maduro and transferred him to the United States, where he faces drug trafficking charges. He is being held a short distance from the UN headquarters while awaiting trial.

Her trip to New York marks the first visit to the United States by a Venezuelan head of state since 2018, when Maduro himself travelled to the city for the General Assembly.

Addressing her compatriots in her remarks, Rodriguez cautioned that the road ahead would not be simple. "I do not promise you an easy way forward," she said, adding that rebuilding the country's national soul would be her priority.
