Venezuela Quake Death Toll Climbs to 6,301, Officials Say
Venezuela's official death toll from June's twin earthquakes has risen to 6,301, with thousands of homes still under evaluation.
The official death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in late June has risen to 6,301, according to an update released Monday by National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who also leads the command overseeing temporary camps, shared the figures on his Telegram channel. The update also noted that 287 homes have so far been handed over to families displaced by the disaster.
Authorities have completed structural evaluations of 53,314 homes across the affected regions. Of these, 31,336 were deemed habitable, while 12,411 were classified as having restricted access due to structural damage. A further 9,567 homes were labeled high-risk and are likely unfit for occupancy.
The two earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck more than six weeks ago. Their epicenters were located in the western state of Yaracuy and the central state of La Guaira, respectively.
Rescue and recovery operations continue in the hardest-hit areas, with crews still searching through rubble and clearing debris from damaged buildings.
