Man dies as car catches fire on Thiruvananthapuram road
A man died after his car caught fire at Venganoor in Thiruvananthapuram early Monday. Police identified him as Titus Kurian from Kottayam.
A 55-year-old man from Kottayam died after his car caught fire on a road in Venganoor, Thiruvananthapuram, in the early hours of Monday. The deceased has been identified as Titus Kurian, a resident of Ettumanoor, based on preliminary information available with the police.
The incident took place around 5:30 a.m. Kurian is believed to have left his home late Sunday night and was driving towards Thiruvananthapuram. Reports suggest a family dispute had occurred at his residence before he began the journey.
Witnesses said smoke started rising from the moving vehicle near Venganoor, and within moments, the car was engulfed in flames. The driver reportedly tried to steer the car to the side of the road, but the vehicle brushed against tree branches, causing the fire to spread to roadside vegetation.
The car's burglar alarm drew the attention of nearby residents and passersby, who alerted the Fire and Rescue Services and the police. Some onlookers attempted to open the rear door to pull the driver out, but the intensity of the blaze made any rescue impossible.
By the time emergency teams arrived, the car was completely gutted. The body recovered from inside was charred beyond visual recognition. Police traced the vehicle's ownership through its registration records, confirming it belonged to Kurian. His relatives have been informed.
Investigators are now working to confirm the identity through scientific methods and to establish the sequence of events that led to the fire. Police have not ruled out the possibility of suicide.
