Venice Film Festival Opens with Danny Boyle's 'Ink' and Lifetime Honor for George Clooney

The 83rd Venice Film Festival is underway, opening with the world premiere of Danny Boyle's 'Ink'. The Netflix drama, starring Jack O'Connell, Guy Pearce, and Claire Foy, explores the birth of Rupert Murdoch's tabloid empire. The film's cast and director attended a press conference ahead of the screening.

Festival regular George Clooney was also honored at the opening ceremony, receiving a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement.

The festival's competition slate is packed with high-profile titles. Werner Herzog presents 'Bucking Fastard', featuring Rooney and Kate Mara as identical twins, while Martin McDonagh unveils his CIA tale 'Wild Horse Nine' with John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, and Steve Buscemi. Other notable competition entries include Florian Zeller's 'Bunker' with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, and Lee Chang-dong's 'Possible Love', his first film in eight years.

Hirokazu Kore-eda is in competition with 'Look Back', a live-action adaptation of a manga about two aspiring artists. Casey Affleck brings his third directorial effort, 'Company', while Ilya Khrzhanovsky premieres 'Dau'. The lineup also includes new works from Nanni Moretti, Cedric Kahn, and Shinya Tsukamoto.

Out of competition, Paul Schrader's 'The Basics of Philosophy' drew Jack Huston, Bill Pullman, and Sofia Boutella to the red carpet. The festival also features 'Primetime' with Robert Pattinson and Phoebe Bridgers, and a documentary on Oasis's 2025 world tour, 'Don't Look Back in Anger', with the Gallagher brothers in attendance.

Other premieres include 'Father Joe' with Al Pacino and Kiefer Sutherland, 'The Echo Chamber' from Andrea Pallaoro, and 'A Place to Heal' by Cedric Kahn. The festival will also host an amfAR gala, with Taika Waititi hosting and Bebe Rexha performing. The event concludes with an award ceremony where the Golden Lion winner will be announced.
