Tamil Nadu CM Vijay's Jaw Gesture Reopens Wounds of MK Stalin's 1976 Emergency Ordeal

A seemingly fleeting gesture in the Tamil Nadu Assembly has ignited a major political controversy, reopening a painful chapter from the Emergency era. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has come under sharp criticism from the DMK after he was seen holding his jaw during a speech on September 7, a move interpreted as a mockery of DMK president MK Stalin.

Vijay, who was addressing the Assembly on alleged corruption by the opposition, has since clarified that the gesture was entirely involuntary. In a statement, he said his body language was an accidental expression and not intended to hurt anyone's feelings on a personal level.

The DMK, however, has linked the gesture to a specific incident from 1976. Stalin, then a young DMK leader in his early twenties, was arrested during the Emergency after the party's government was dismissed. He was detained under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and imprisoned in Madras Central Prison for several months until his release in March 1977.

In his autobiography, Stalin has described the prison as a torture chamber. Testimony before the Justice MM Ismail Commission noted that he and other inmates faced severe physical abuse, which reportedly left him with a fractured jaw. For the DMK, this injury is not just a physical scar but a symbol of resistance against repression, often described as a "brave scar."

The controversy has also strained relations between Vijay and his ally, the CPM. State secretary P Shanmugam condemned the gesture, calling it an irresponsible act of body shaming. He also criticized the use of the Assembly for personal attacks, arguing that the legislature should focus on public welfare rather than such exchanges.

The incident has thus transformed a simple gesture into a flashpoint, highlighting the deep political rivalries in the state and the enduring legacy of the Emergency.
