Police identify woman whose body was found in VTPS canal, three held for questioning
NTR Commissionerate police have identified a woman whose dismembered body was found in the VTPS cooling canal and taken three suspects into custody.
Police investigating the death of a woman whose dismembered body was recovered from the VTPS cooling canal have taken three people into custody for questioning, the West Zone police of the NTR Commissionerate said.
The remains were found in the canal, which falls under Ibrahimpatnam police station limits, on September 18, 2026.
According to West Zone Assistant Commissioner of Police N.S.V.K. Durga Rao, investigators checked records of women reported missing across Andhra Pradesh as well as in the neighbouring Telangana districts of Bhadradri-Kothagudem and Khammam. That exercise led them to identify the deceased as Kalyani alias Durga.
Kalyani, 28, was a semi-orphan and a native of Chinna Tatinada village in West Godavari district. She spent part of her childhood at an NGO home in Gannavaram and later married a man from Mangalagiri. The couple had a son, but family problems led to a separation and she was living alone.
Investigators said she was allegedly in a relationship with a mutton shop owner in Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada. On September 17, the two are said to have quarrelled after she asked him for money.
Officers suspect that two people may have been involved in the killing. According to the investigation, the body was cut into pieces and dumped in the cooling canal to destroy evidence.
Police examined the call data list from Kalyani's mobile phone and, on that basis, took three persons into custody for questioning. Further investigation is under way.
