Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar takes VRS, set to become Chief Information Commissioner

Senior IPS officer Vinay Kumar, who was serving as Bihar's Director General of Police, has taken voluntary retirement, with the state government clearing his application with immediate effect. He has also been appointed the state's next Chief Information Commissioner.

Kumar, a 1991-batch officer, had applied for voluntary retirement on September 25. A notification from the state Home Department issued late on Saturday night said the request was accepted by relaxing the rules that ordinarily require an applicant to give three months' notice.

His tenure as DGP was otherwise due to end in December on superannuation. He had recently proceeded on leave for health reasons.

A separate notification from the General Administration Department announced his appointment as Chief Information Commissioner from the date he assumes charge. Official sources indicated he is expected to take up the new role after receiving treatment for his medical problems.

Preeta Verma, also a 1991-batch IPS officer, took over as Acting DGP after Kumar went on leave earlier this month. She is likely to continue in the post till further orders.
