VinFast Appoints Founder's Eldest Son as Global CEO Amid Restructuring Push

VinFast names Pham Nhat Quan Anh as global CEO, succeeding his father, as the EV maker restructures and expands overseas.

Vietnamese electric vehicle maker VinFast has appointed Pham Nhat Quan Anh, the eldest son of founder Pham Nhat Vuong, as its global chief executive. The 33-year-old, who became global chairman in May, will also serve as chairman and CEO of VinFast Vietnam.

The company said Anh will hold ultimate and comprehensive responsibility for all of VinFast's operations as it enters a new phase of growth. He succeeds his father, who will remain on VinFast's board.

Anh becomes the fifth chief executive in VinFast's history, following former General Motors executive James DeLuca, ex-Opel chief Michael Lohscheller, and Le Thi Thu Thuy, who led the company through its Nasdaq listing. A graduate of Singapore Management University, Anh held senior roles at VinFast and other Vingroup companies before becoming chairman of VinFast Auto. He will continue as chief executive of VinMetal, a steel producer within the Vingroup conglomerate.

The leadership change comes as VinFast pursues a restructuring plan unveiled in May. The plan would transfer manufacturing assets worth about $530 million to a purchaser group that would also assume roughly $6.9 billion in debt, aiming to reduce future capital requirements. The complexity of the deal and the involvement of investors with ties to Vingroup and Vuong have raised concerns among some analysts and shareholders.

VinFast reported a nearly 42% rise in first-quarter revenue but a wider net loss. It has relied on ongoing financial support from Vuong, founder and chairman of Vingroup, Vietnam's largest conglomerate and VinFast's parent company. The EV maker is targeting growth in key markets such as Southeast Asia and India.

Separately, Pham Nhat Minh Hoang, Vuong's second son, was named global chief executive of VinFast-linked taxi firm GSM, with Nguyen Quoc Tuan appointed global chairman. GSM plans a Hong Kong listing in 2028 and intends to purchase around 1 million EVs and 4 million e-scooters from VinFast between 2026 and 2030.
