VMAs Producers Unveil New Artist-Director Honors, Taylor Swift First Recipient

Producers behind the 2026 Video Music Awards have shed light on the launch of the show's new Artist-Director Honors, an accolade making its debut this year with Taylor Swift as its first recipient.

Speaking in Los Angeles, producer Bruce Gillmer said the new honour is an extension of the Vanguard award and, in some respects, carries even greater stature. He said the initial idea came from an external source, without elaborating, after which the production team spent considerable time and effort shaping what the award would represent.

Gillmer noted the significance of introducing something as large as, or larger than, the Vanguard award so many years after that prize was established.

The producers said Swift's record in the directing category made this an apt moment to introduce the honour. She has received more than half a dozen nominations for directing and has won four, they said.

According to Gillmer, the distinction between the two accolades lies in their focus. The Vanguard award centres on the video itself, while the Artist-Director Honors is intended to recognise the talent behind it, serving as a purely artist-driven accolade for creative work in the medium.

The producers — Barb Bialkowski, Jesse Ignjatovic, Bruce Gillmer and Van Toffler — discussed the new award in a joint appearance.
