Volkswagen Plans US Comeback With Pickup Truck, New Leadership
Volkswagen will revamp its US strategy with a new pickup truck and leadership change, targeting growth in high-margin segments.
Volkswagen is preparing a significant overhaul of its United States operations, according to a company source. The German automaker's revised strategy includes introducing a pickup truck to the American market and installing new management to lead the effort.
Marco Schubert, currently head of sales at Audi, will relocate to the US to take over from Kjell Gruner, who is departing the company. The leadership change signals a fresh direction for the brand's North American business.
The move comes as Thomas Schaefer, head of the Volkswagen brand, identifies growth potential in pickup trucks and large SUVs. These vehicle categories are known for high profit margins and strong consumer demand in the US, yet they are segments where Volkswagen currently has no offerings.
The company aims to launch its first pickup truck before the end of the decade, with production planned at a US facility. Volkswagen already operates a plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, though production of the electric ID.4 at that site was recently halted ahead of schedule.
The strategic pivot underscores Volkswagen's effort to strengthen its position in one of the world's most competitive auto markets, where it has historically struggled to match domestic rivals in truck and large SUV sales.
