India and China Should Be Partners, Says Wang Yi After Modi-Xi Consensus
Wang Yi says Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi reached their most important consensus, covering border peace and mutual support at BRICS.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has said that the leaders of India and China arrived at their most significant understanding, describing the two countries as partners rather than rivals.
Speaking on the outcome of the latest engagement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping, Wang said the two sides had agreed to work together to preserve calm and tranquillity along their shared border. The understanding is being presented as the central takeaway from the leaders' discussions.
Beyond the border question, the two countries are also expected to extend mutual support as they take turns holding the chairmanship of BRICS. The arrangement would see each side back the other during its respective term at the helm of the grouping.
Wang's remarks frame the relationship in cooperative terms, casting the two neighbours as partners. The border agreement and the BRICS understanding together form the core of what he described as the most important consensus reached between the two leaders.
