Wayanad suspends quarry and tourism operations amid heavy rain alert
Wayanad authorities suspend quarrying, trekking and adventure tourism operations after an IMD heavy rainfall alert, with relocation plans readied for vulnerable areas.
Operations at quarries, trekking routes and adventure tourism centres across Wayanad have been suspended following a warning from the India Meteorological Department about the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the district.
The order was issued by District Collector V. Chelsasini in her capacity as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, with public safety cited as the reason for the precautionary measure.
As part of the same directive, grama panchayat secretaries have been instructed to carry out relocations if residents in disaster-prone or vulnerable pockets need to be moved. In Kalpetta, the municipal secretary has been asked to coordinate with the chief operating officer of the township construction site at Elston Estate to shift families living nearby should soil erosion pose a threat.
The Meppadi grama panchayat secretary has been directed to arrange evacuations, if required, from the Kalladi-Anakkampoyil tunnel construction site, the Mundakkai-Chooralmala disaster-affected zone and other landslide-prone locations within the panchayat's limits.
Violations of the order will attract penal action under Section 51(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the Collector said.
