Wayanad to Launch Two-Phase E-Waste Collection Drive from September 28
Wayanad will hold a two-phase e-waste collection drive from September 28, with the goal of becoming a completely e-waste-free district by October 2.
Wayanad is set to begin a two-phase electronic waste collection campaign from September 28, organised by the Suchitwa Mission along with local self-government institutions. The initiative is intended to declare the district completely free of electronic waste.
The first phase, running from September 28 to 30, will target e-waste accumulated at government institutions across the district. The material will be collected through the Clean Kerala Company and handed over for scientific disposal.
Collection centres will operate at three locations: the Vocational Higher Secondary School in Mananthavady on September 28, the premises of the Sulthan Bathery Mini Civil Station on September 29, and the Civil Station premises at Kalpetta on September 30.
Besides conventional electronic waste, the drive will accept discarded items such as tubes, CFL bulbs and batteries, which can pollute the environment if not disposed of properly.
In the second phase, e-waste held by the public will be collected through agencies engaged by local self-government institutions. Respective local bodies will designate collection centres, and the process is to be completed by October 2.
A notable feature of the campaign is that households and private establishments will be paid the amount specified in the rate card for the e-waste collected from them. The payment will be credited to their accounts through Haritha Karma Sena.
Suchitwa Mission officials said the campaign is aimed at making Wayanad a model district in waste management. A meeting chaired by Agriculture Minister T. Siddique had earlier decided to declare Wayanad a completely e-waste-free district by October 2.
