Palestinian driver shot dead after West Bank checkpoint ramming, Israeli police say

Israeli police said a Palestinian man was shot and killed on Thursday after he allegedly drove his car into a security checkpoint in the occupied West Bank, seriously wounding an officer.

According to police, Israeli forces at the scene opened fire on the driver as he tried to flee. The suspect was identified as Mahmoud Suleiman by the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The incident took place at the Maccabim checkpoint. A paramedic with the Magen David Adom emergency service said the injured officer was unconscious when medical crews reached the site, and was evacuated to a hospital in Jerusalem.

"EMTs and paramedics rushed to the scene in large numbers. On arrival, we found a male, approximately 40 years old, seriously injured and unconscious. He was evacuated immediately to Share Tedik Hospital. The terrorist was dealt with at the scene by IDF forces," said Aryeh Myers, a Magen David Adom paramedic.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, settler violence has surged across the Israeli-occupied West Bank, with an increase in attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians. More than 100 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli settlers or soldiers this year, according to the Ramallah-based Palestinian Health Ministry. Four Israelis have been killed by Palestinians, including one over the weekend at a spring near Ramallah.
