West Bank Shooting Wounds Israeli; Houthi Missile on Riyadh Condemned
An Israeli man was critically wounded in a West Bank shooting, while Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait condemned a Houthi missile attack on Riyadh.
A shooting attack in the northern West Bank left a 30-year-old Israeli man critically wounded on Sunday morning, hours before the start of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
According to the Israeli military, the assailant fired from a vehicle and then fled the scene on foot. Troops set up several roadblocks across the area in a search for the attacker.
The violence came shortly after Israeli forces mounted a large counterterrorism operation in the northern West Bank town of Al-Mughayyir. Palestinian officials said at least 28 people were detained in the raid.
Tensions in the occupied territory have risen sharply, with extremist Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians increasing markedly, a trend critics link to the influence of right-wing, ultra-nationalist figures in Israel's government.
Separately, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait issued statements condemning Yemen's Iranian-backed Houthi rebels for firing a ballistic missile at the Saudi capital, Riyadh, on Saturday. The three governments described the strike as a threat to regional security and stability and a violation of international law, and expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia in defending its sovereignty and protecting civilians.
The Muslim World League also denounced the attack on civilians and civilian infrastructure, calling it a breach of religious values and of international and humanitarian law.
It was the first time Riyadh had been targeted since fighting with the Iran-backed rebels escalated and opened a new front in the Iran conflict. Saudi Arabia said the missile was intercepted. Some residents reported hearing an explosion, and others later saw a plume of smoke near the airport. No casualties or damage were reported.
